Honest and heart-warming drama starring Ernest Borgnine as a New York butcher who finds love with schoolteacher Betsy Blair. As the loveable, plain-talking lug, Borgnine showed an acting depth not hinted at in previous 'villain' roles, and his performance earned him an Oscar. The film also won for Best Director (Delbert Mann), Best Picture, and Best Screenplay (Paddy Chayefsky, adapting his own TV script and went on to win again for 1971's The Hospital and 1976's Network).
